Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions are typically recommended for optimal results?

A series of treatments is recommended, but the number of sessions varies by individual. Typically, 4 to 5 sessions are needed for optimal results.

Is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy painful?

IPL is generally painless, with most patients reporting only mild discomfort. Some may feel a quick snap or warm sensation with each pulse.

How long does IPL treatment take?

IPL sessions are typically quick, lasting around 5–15 minutes.

Will I need downtime afterward?

Patients can return to normal activities the same day after treatment.

Is Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) safe for all skin types?

Yes, LLLT is considered safe for all skin types and can be applied to sensitive areas like the eyelids. It is non-thermal and does not generate heat, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive skin or those who have not responded well to other treatments. Patients may experience a slight warming sensation during the procedure, but it should not be uncomfortable

What are the potential benefits of Low Level Light Therapy for dry eye treatment?

LLLT can be beneficial to combine with IPL for enhanced treatment. It may also help with dry eye by stimulating an immune system response in the meibomian glands at the cellular level.

What are the potential risks and side effects of IPL and Low Level Light Therapy?

LLLT is generally considered safe with minimal side effects. Patients may experience a slight warming sensation during the procedure, but it should not be uncomfortable.

What is the procedure like for Low Level Light Therapy treatment?

The treatment involves sitting comfortably while a specialized device emits light onto the eyelids. Treatments are usually brief, often lasting less than 30 minutes, and may consist of several sessions depending on the severity of the condition.

What is the recovery time for Low Level Light Therapy treatment?

Recovery time for LLLT treatment may vary, but many patients report significant relief from dry eye symptoms shortly after the first few sessions.

Will I need to repeat this treatment?

Results vary for patients. Dry eye is a chronic but manageable condition. Research shows multi-step treatments are more effective than single step therapies. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may enjoy lasting results for up to a year before needing additional treatments. On-going care reduces flare ups and symptom variability. Repeat treatments are also less intensive over time. Comprehensive care supports long-term eye health and comfort.

Will my insurance cover this treatment?

Insurance plans primarily cover treatments they deem "medically necessary" to treat a disease. Many dry eye treatments, especially advanced in-office procedures, are often classified as cosmetic, elective, or non-urgent "comfort care" by insurers.
