What Are the Signs My Child Might Need Glasses?

August 1, 2025

As children grow, their vision plays a critical role in how they explore, learn, and engage with the world around them. However, young children often don’t recognize or communicate that they’re having trouble seeing clearly. It’s important for parents to be aware of the signs that may indicate their child needs glasses and to prioritize regular pediatric eye exams for early detection.

What Causes Blurry Vision in Children?

Blurry vision in children is most commonly caused by refractive errors, which occur when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina. The three most common types are myopia (nearsightedness), where distant objects appear blurry; hyperopia (farsightedness), where close-up objects are harder to see clearly; and astigmatism, which causes overall distorted or blurred vision due to an irregularly shaped cornea. These conditions can develop as a child grows and may not always be obvious without a professional eye exam, making routine vision checks essential for early detection and treatment.

Common Signs Your Child May Need Glasses

•          Squinting: Squinting is one of the most noticeable signs of a vision problem. When a child squints, they’re attempting to temporarily improve clarity by changing the shape of their eye. This may signal nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

•          Frequent Eye Rubbing: While occasional eye rubbing is normal, doing it often (especially when trying to focus) may indicate visual strain or fatigue caused by blurred vision.

•          Holding Devices or Books Too Close: If your child frequently holds a tablet, book, or toy very close to their face, it could mean they’re having trouble seeing clearly at normal distances, often a sign of nearsightedness.

•          Head Tilting or Covering One Eye: This behavior may suggest a problem with eye alignment or a vision imbalance between the eyes. Children sometimes compensate for these issues subconsciously.

•          Complaints of Headaches or Eye Pain: Consistent headaches or eye discomfort, particularly after screen time or reading, can be a sign of uncorrected vision problems causing eye strain.

•          Trouble in School or Avoidance of Reading: Struggling academically, especially with reading or focusing on the board, may stem from poor vision. If a teacher mentions attention issues or learning difficulties, an eye exam is a good next step.

•          Excessive Tearing or Light Sensitivity: While these symptoms can have multiple causes, they sometimes relate to vision issues and warrant an evaluation.

The Next Step

If you notice any of these signs that your child may need glasses, it’s important to schedule a pediatric eye exam promptly to ensure any vision issues are identified and addressed early.

Since children often can't recognize or express that they’re having trouble seeing, annual eye exams are an important part of maintaining their overall health and development. At Vision Center South in Wetumpka, we recommend scheduling regular comprehensive eye exams before your child starts school and continuing yearly throughout their school-age years.
