Step-by-Step Guide to Properly Inserting Contact Lenses

October 10, 2023

Wearing contact lenses can be a game-changer for individuals seeking clear vision without glasses. However, inserting contacts requires a few simple yet crucial steps to ensure comfort and eye health. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of properly inserting contact lenses.

Step 1: Wash Your Hands
Before touching your contacts or your eyes, it's essential to wash your hands thoroughly with mild soap and water. Dry your hands with a lint-free towel to prevent any debris from getting on the lenses.

Step 2: Prepare Your Lenses
If your lenses are new, gently take them out of the manufacturer's packaging.  If your lenses are reusable, grab your contact lens case filled with fresh multipurpose contact lens solution. Gently shake the case to loosen the lenses from their storage compartment. Remove each lens from the case and closely examine them. Make sure the lens is not inside out – it should resemble a shallow bowl with smooth edges.

Step 3: Position Yourself
Stand in front of a well-lit mirror. This will help you see what you're doing and prevent the lens from falling onto surfaces that might contaminate it.

Step 4: Hold the Lens
With one hand, hold the contact lens on the tip of your index finger. Use your other hand's middle finger to pull your upper eyelid upward and your lower eyelid downward. This helps create a larger opening for the lens to go in.

Step 5: Insert the Lens
Gently place the lens onto the lower part of your eye. Look upward while placing the lens to avoid blinking onto it. Once the lens is on your eye, release your eyelids slowly. The lens should settle comfortably on your eye.

Step 6: Blink and Adjust
Blink a few times to help the lens center itself on your eye. If the lens feels uncomfortable or you notice blurred vision, gently close your eye and use your index finger to slide the lens into a more comfortable position.

Step 7: Repeat for the Other Eye
Repeat steps 3 to 6 for your other eye. Remember to always start with the same eye to avoid mixing up your lenses.

Step 8: Check for Comfort and Clarity
Allow a few minutes for your eyes to adjust to the new lenses. Blink naturally and assess if the lenses are comfortable and your vision is clear. If you experience persistent discomfort, redness, or blurred vision, remove the lenses immediately and consult your eye care professional.

Step 9: Dispose of Solution and Close the Case
Once you've successfully inserted both lenses and are satisfied with their comfort and clarity, empty the lens case, rinse it with fresh solution and let it air dry. Store your contact lens case upside down with the lids off to ensure proper ventilation and drying.

Step 10: Admire Your Clear Vision
Congratulations! You've successfully inserted your contact lenses. Enjoy your newfound clear vision and the freedom from glasses.

Remember, practice makes perfect. It might take a few tries to become comfortable with inserting contact lenses, but don't get discouraged. If you encounter persistent issues or discomfort, don't hesitate to reach out to your eye care professional for guidance. Proper hygiene, patience, and care are key to maintaining healthy eyes while wearing contact lenses. If you currently wear glasses and would be interested in trying contacts, call your nearest Vision Center South to discuss your options, and request a trial pair of contacts.
