Common Treatments for Dry Eyes

January 20, 2022

There are countless causes for dry eyes, including turning up the heat in the winter months. However, certain medications and diseases can cause chronic dry eyes that leave you feeling like there’s no relief. If you’re suffering from dry eyes, here are some treatments to try.

Home Remedies

In a pinch, a few home remedies can help you restore moisture and lubrication to your dry eyes to provide some comfort. However, home remedies should be considered a short-term solution. To get permanent relief, you need to address the underlying cause. In the meantime, here are some things to try:

●     Reduce screen time and give your eyes time to rest.

●     Gently massage your eyelids for a few moments.

●     Use a warm compress, like a wet bath cloth that you steamed in the microwave for about 30 seconds.

●     Make sure you’re getting enough sleep.

●     Drink lots of water to keep your whole body hydrated.

●     Run a humidifier to offset a dry climate.

If none of these home remedies work for you, it might be time to try a supplement or medication.

Supplements and Medications

Supplements that support tear production can help you find relief from dry eyes while supporting your overall eye health. However, a supplement alone may not be enough for long-term relief, which is why it’s important to talk to your eye doctor. Here are some supplements and medications to ask them about.

Tear Support Supplement

It’s been shown that certain vitamins and omega fatty acids can support natural tear production and improve lubrication in the eyes. This Tear Support supplement contains Vitamin E, fish oil (great source of omega-3s), borage seed oil (great source of omega-6s), and organic flaxseed oil (great source of ALA), all of which have been shown to help dry eyes.

Lubricating Eye Drops

Artificial tears, also known as lubricating eye drops, can provide temporary relief for dry eyes when you pick them up over the counter. For better relief, your doctor may prescribe a medicated eye drop, which can help protect the natural oil layer in your eye and long-term eye health.

Prescription Medications

Depending on the cause of your dry eyes, your doctor may prescribe an oral medication or nasal spray that helps stimulate natural tear production. The only way to know which option is best for you is to go through a proper diagnosis so you and your doctor can work together to treat your dry eyes and restore your vision, focus, and health.
