August Is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

August 10, 2021

Many schools are beginning the school year in August. This means that the beginning of the new school year is coinciding with Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. As you prepare your child for the new school year, it’s important to remember to schedule a comprehensive eye exam.

Vision problems tend to be quite common among school-age children. If left untreated, vision problems can affect your child’s learning abilities, social skills, and self-esteem.

Your Child’s Eye Health

Children need different abilities to succeed in their education. Of these skills, good vision is one of the most important ones. Almost 80 percent of classroom education is transmitted visually. Reading, writing, using computers, and board work are visual tasks that occur daily.

Children’s eyes are constantly being used when in the classroom and even during play or outdoor activities. When a child’s vision is impaired, education and social life can suffer. Routine pediatric eye care is an important part of your child’s overall health and can help prevent long-term consequences of bad vision.

Signs of Vision Impairment

Your child may not realize right away that they have a vision problem. As a parent, there are some things that you should look out for to find out if your child is experiencing vision difficulties. Some common signs indicating that your child’s vision may be impaired include squinting, frequent eye rubbing, squeezing the eyes, and straining or turning the head when looking at objects. If you notice any of these signs regularly, it is important to schedule an eye exam as soon as possible.

Common Vision Problems

Common eye conditions affect many children around the world. Some of these conditions include refractive errors, color blindness, crossed eyes, and lazy eye. Refractive errors include nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Treating common vision issues will often involve the use of corrective lenses.

In some cases, vision issues may be due to an eye injury. If your child experiences an eye injury, it is important to seek immediate medical attention. Do not allow the child to touch or rub their eyes if an object or chemical gets into them.

Ensuring Eye Safety

Eye safety is a vital part of overall eye health. During this Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, it is important to think about safety. Thousands of children suffer from eye injuries every year. The injuries can occur at home or outside the home.

Most of these injuries could have been prevented. It is important to ensure that children stay safe when playing sports. Wearing protective eyewear will help keep your child’s eyes safe while participating in sports. When buying toys for your kids, make sure they meet safety standards.

Wellness Visits

Having your child’s eyes examined regularly is very important. A pediatric eye doctor can detect refractive errors and other eye problems. If the doctor suspects that your child has vision problems, they can carry out further testing.

If you have a family history of childhood eye or vision problems, it is important to schedule regular eye exams. Your child’s ability to see well will affect their performance in school activities.
